Crying is not an embarrassing or debilitating act. Either man or woman will cry over something that happened. Although most of us associate crying with sadness or as a reaction to a negative situation, sometimes not.
For example, you may feel overwhelmed with joy and find your eyes glistening with tears. Some people don’t know why they cry. Suddenly tears dripped and their feelings were stirred.
Then what causes someone to cry for no reason? In fact, there are some psychological and neurological disorders that can cause people to cry for no reason.
Depression symptoms are among the causes of people crying for no reason
Tears are associated with depressive symptoms when you cry for trivial things and do not know the reason for doing so. Tears are difficult to hold and come out more than usual.
Symptoms of depression may include:
- sadness and gloominess
- feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
- low energy
- difficulty concentrating
Your crying may be related to depression if you:
- cry over small things or have trouble identifying why you’re crying
- cry much more than normal
- have trouble stopping your tears
Due to anxiety disorder
People with anxiety are more likely to feel anxious and nervous, even on a daily basis or at any time.
Symptoms often include:
- edginess or irritability
- excessive worry
- muscle tension
- fatigue
- difficulty focusing or concentrating
- trouble sleeping
Crying for no reason can also be caused by neurological problems, such as pseudobulbar
Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is a neurological disorder caused by an injury or disorder in the part of the brain that controls a person’s emotions. People with PBA often find it difficult to control their emotions.
Why do we cry?
Glands located above your eyes produce most of your tears. They’re called lachrymal glands. The word lachrymal means tear. Every time you blink, tears flow to your eyes from ducts attached to your lachrymal glands. This keeps the surface of your eyes lubricated and protects them from substances like dust, smoke, or onion gasses. Tears also drain into your nose.
Tears are made up of:
- water
- salt
- protective antibodies
- enzymes
Some people cry more than others. Women tend to cry more than men, even in cultures where it’s acceptable for males to cry. Crying more than is normal for you may be a symptom of depression or a neurological disorder.
If you’re concerned about the amount you’re crying, talk to your doctor.
