Black Thorn Durian has a bright yellow and rosy orange hue, with its signature mark being its thick core and a reddish-brown line along the middle of the durian. This is the new darling of the durian scene that can out-price even Musang King with its rosy, flame-colored corpulence. It is new even to Penang Island since it originates on the mainland side of Penang State.
Black Thorn’s flesh is thick and creamy. Comparing it to Mao Shan Wang, Black Thorn Durian tastes sweeter and more custardy. It also has a lighter texter. The Black Thorn mother tree originates in Kampung Lima Kongsi, near Sungai Bakap, just a bit to the south of the second bridge to the island. It was a secret for years.

- Black Thorn durian has the most similar shape to Musang King durian. The Black Thorn durian is roundish in shape and it looks like a sign of a star at the bottom of the fruit.
- The real reason for its name is the small tiny blackthorn poking out of the tiny hole at the bottom of the fruit.
- People love this because it is softer in texture and not as filling as Musang King. Because this is still a relatively new breed, not many farms have this yet so it is still expensive.
