While on the road, we often find white lines. The white lines are the road markings. The purpose of road markings is to show directions, give warnings, and also information to road users.

There are three types of road markings in Malaysia:

1) Longitudinal lines

  • Centre lines
  • Edge lines
  • Double lines, etc

2) Transverse lines

  • Stopping lanes
  • Pedestrian lanes
  • Giving way

3) Other lines

  • Painted island and chevron marking
  • Arrow
  • Yellow square

Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) advises all motorcycle riders out there, to always be careful when riding past these road markings. This is due to the markings that can cause harm to the riders.

A video shared by PDRM shows a motorcycle passing on the road marking (chevron marking). A man is involved in an accident after passing by the chevron marking. See the video below.

To not let the same thing happens to other riders, PDRM shares a few tips that can be applied by the riders when passing on the road marking.

1) Pay attention and be careful

2) Make sure the motorcycle tyres are not worn

3) If possible, do not pass on the road marking for safety purposes

Other vehicles on the roads, like cars, lorries, trucks, and others, should also watch out for other vehicles too. Make sure to follow the rules of the road.
