Strategic Expansion: TalentCorp Fortifies Regional Footprint In Johor

Johor, poised for an economic boost is set to soar with the impending introduction of the Singapore-Johor Special Economic Zone and the Digital Johor Masterplan 2030. Already a frontrunner in investment attraction, having secured RM70.6 billion in 2022, Johor is steadfast on its trajectory to achieve its development goals.

As a testament to Johor’s promising future and its pivotal role in Malaysia’s growth, Talent Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp) has unveiled its inaugural office in the southern region. This strategically positioned office, located at the Career Centre of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTMCC), symbolises a significant milestone for TalentCorp and its commitment to fostering nurturing talent development in Johor.

The launching ceremony held today was officiated by YBrs. Puan Tazrina Ahmad, General Manager, Johor Human Capital Strategic Unit on behalf of YB Tuan Mohd Hairi Mad Shah, Johor Exco for Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives, and Human Resources, along with Thomas Mathew, Group Chief Executive Officer of TalentCorp, and Prof. Dr. Rosli Bin Md Illias, Deputy Vice Chancellor of UTM.

YB Tuan Mohd Hairi in his speech which was read by YBrs. Puan Tazrina Ahmad, praised TalentCorp’s efforts, expressing his excitement by highlighting that the launch of TalentCorp’s inaugural office in the southern region reflects a strong vote of confidence in this state and its future growth potential.

“The new satellite office will help Johor intensify the partnership between the state and federal agency in line with the objectives of Maju Johor 2030, especially for the development of Johor’s talent ecosystem,” he said. 

Since its establishment in 2011, TalentCorp had initiated activities in both the Northern and Southern regions. With the increasing investments coming in to these two regions, the agency opened offices in Penang in March 2022, and now in Johor to provide more focused services and to intensify collaboration among Industry, Educational Institutions, and the Government for talent development.

Thomas Mathew, TalentCorp’s Group CEO highlighted on Johor’s potential on being a major contributor to the country’s GDP as a key reason for the agency’s focus on Johor to bolster its talent development efforts. 

“In 2023, we hosted two Industry-Academia Collaboration (IAC) workshops in Johor, introduced our first state-level Critical Occupations List (MyCOL), and launched the TalentCorp’s mynext Graduate Employability Grant, where UTM is the first recipient of the fund to host activities for their students,” he said. 

He added that there are various other intervention measures being carried out by the Government through TalentCorp and the State Government, especially to improve the support system in empowering the country’s education institutions with the strengthening of TVET programmes and on-the-job training.
