No Gain No Love, starring Shin Mina, Kim Young-dae, Lee Sang-yi, and Han Ji-hyeon, is one of the hottest K-dramas of the moment and you don’t want to miss out. The rom-com centers around Son Hae-yeong (Shin Mina), who seeks a fake wedding in order to not lose out on a promotion at work, and Kim Ji-uk (Kim Young-dae), a convenience store employee who agrees to be her fake groom. Here’s a quick recap of episodes 1 to 8!

Episode 1:

No Gain No Love

[Shin Mina]

The first episode introduces us to Hae-yeong’s childhood and how she came to be an expert at calculating profit and loss. Then we’re brought to the present day where she’s attending her ex-boyfriend (and current colleague)’s wedding. She realizes that since they broke up 6 months ago, he had actually been cheating on her. Later we meet Ji-uk who is well-known for his thoughtfulness and kind actions, Bok Gyu-hyun (Lee Sang-yi) who is the CEO of Hae-yeong’s company, and Nam Ja-yeon (Han Ji-hyeon) who is Hae-yeong’s family-like friend and the author of a popular R-rated web novel. While Hae-yeong and Ji-uk have an antagonistic relationship, the episode ends with Hae-yeong drunkenly asking Ji-uk to marry him in order for her to achieve a fast-track promotion. Lots of fun and hilarious moments ensue in the opening episode, so be sure to watch it in its entirety!

Episode 2:

No Gain No Love

[From left: Shin Mina, Kim Young-dae]

In episode 2, Hae-yeong moves full-speed ahead in planning her wedding despite not having secured a groom yet. She’s determined to have the fake wedding in order to not miss out on the promotion through the company contest as only married women are allowed to work more closely with the CEO due to his father’s philandering past. Ji-uk’s heart softens when he overhears Hae-yeong’s friends talk about how Hae-yeong wants to have a fake wedding while her mom is not completely lost to dementia. He agrees to be her fake groom as long as she temporarily takes care of a stray cat he has named Baby. Elsewhere, Ja-yeon meets one of her biggest fans who happens to be Gyu-hyun’s mother.

All of the details are falling into place for the wedding. However, Hae-yeon realizes that she needs a proposal as well as some video and photo documentation to feature their love story at the wedding. Initially rejecting Hae-yeong’s pleas, Ji-uk surprises her with a cute proposal full of Hae-yeong’s favorite jelly snacks at the convenience store. Ji-uk opens up about how he’s using the wedding as an excuse to avoid someone’s requests for him to go to Canada. Meanwhile, Gyu-hyun is appalled when he discovers his mother’s affinity for the racy web novel Spice Up Our Love. The wedding goes smoothly but the fake newlyweds are forced to share a hotel room in order to avoid arousing suspicion from Hae-yeong’s colleagues who are staying right next door to them. At the end of the episode, we see Hae-yeong’s mother recognizing Ji-uk during the wedding, hinting at a past history.

Episode 4:

No Gain No Love

[From Left: Lee Sang-yi, Han Ji-hyeon]

Episode 4 takes us into the past when Ja-yeon is a high school student with a crush on her classmate Yeo Ha-jun (Lee You-jin). They meet in the present but Ja-yeon hides what kind of content she writes which leads Ha-jun to believe she writes children’s books. Ha-jun is actually Gyu-hyun’s secretary, and they have a hilarious bickering relationship. Hae-yeong and Ji-uk share a steamy moment at the hotel before Hae-yeong heads off on her solo honeymoon trip. Fast forward 3 months and Hae-yeong wins the company contest, but Gyu-hyun is in trouble for writing hateful comments on Ja-yeon’s web novel due to his shock over his mother enjoying it. A particular comment crosses the line which leads Ja-yeon to sue Gyu-hyun for defamation. Gyu-hyun tries to dress up like a pitiful unemployed person when he heads to the police station while Ja-yeon tries to dress to intimidate. Gyu-hyun finds out her identity and also realizes she knows Ha-jun. The end of the episode leads to a cliffhanger as Ji-uk returns, fresh haircut and all, as a new employee at Hae-yeong’s company KKULBEE educational company.

Episode 5:

No Gain No Love

[From left: Shin Mina, Kim Young-dae]

Ji-uk is blackmailed into working at KKULBEE by a mysterious man. If Ji-uk does not do as he says, his biological mother’s family will find out the truth about his existence. Unfortunately, this complicates things for Hae-yeong who wasn’t expecting to see Ji-uk at her workplace. They go out for work and Hae-yeong notices a child with suspicious bruises. The child’s father ends up attacking Hae-yeong after she tries to document the abuse, and Ji-uk helps protect her. Ja-yeon and Gyu-hyun meet again in front of the police station. She refuses to forgive him but faints when she sees a truck seemingly hit him. Gyu-hyun carries her all the way to the hospital. Hae-yeong ends up getting reported for workplace harassment due to a colleague overhearing her and Ji-uk’s conversation. Ji-uk races into the room and explains that she wasn’t harassing him because he’s her husband.

Episode 6:

No Gain No Love

[From left: Shin Mina, Kim Young-dae]

The cat is out of the bag and everyone knows that Hae-yeong and Ji-uk are married. Ji-uk has his ideas regarding the identity of his biological father. Gyu-hyun meets Ji-uk at an orphanage due to Ja-yeon making a deal to withdraw her lawsuit in return for Gyu-hyun volunteering there. Hae-yeong and Ji-uk are forced to spend more time together as they keep up the ruse of their newlywed life. They participate in a press conference to talk about how they stepped in to prevent child abuse. Following that, they’re invited to dinner with their CEO Gyu-hyun, his parents, as well as Hae-yeong’s ex Ahn U-jae (Go Wook) and his wife Kwon I-rin (Jeon Hye-won). After having too much wine, Hae-yeong wakes up to find herself in bed with Ji-uk… and U-jae.

Episode 7:

No Gain No Love

[From left: Shin Mina, Kim Young-dae]

The episode begins with explaining the events that led to the 3 of them sharing a bed. A separate company scandal leads Hae-yeong to work extra hard to convince all of her colleagues about her happy newlywed relationship. Ji-uk moves into the rooftop room at Hae-yeong’s house in order to avoid further suspicion. It turns out he actually lived there 9 years ago as a student. Gyu-hyun and Ja-yeon become closer when he tries to prevent her from seeing Ha-jun. He finds out that she has a crush on Ha-jun, and Ja-yeon eventually sees Ha-jun and realizes Gyu-hyun is Ha-jun’s CEO boss. Hae-yeong and Ji-uk successfully host a housewarming party at their home. Ji-uk confesses his feelings but Hae-yeong doesn’t seem ready yet. However, she changes her mind and ends up going upstairs for a kiss.

Episode 8:

No Gain No Love

[From left: Shin Mina, Kim Young-dae]

After the housewarming party, Ja-yeon and Ha-jun visit their old high school. Ha-jun asks why she suddenly left and transferred schools, leading her to remember her time with Hae-yeong’s parents as her foster family and how she had to transfer schools to escape her abusive biological father. It turns out that Hae-yeong kissed Ji-uk only because Ja-yeon gave her a heads up that U-jae was still in the neighborhood and watching them. After learning this, Ji-uk kisses Hae-yeong back as a form of revenge for kissing him without his consent. Gyu-hyun sincerely apologizes to Ja-yeon and she withdraws the lawsuit. They run away together when she sees her biological father. After visiting the orphanage together and hearing the director talk about Ji-uk being single, U-jae accuses Hae-yeong of faking the marriage to get back at him and suggests they rekindle their romance. Hae-yeong shuts him down immediately and her flirty relationship with Ji-uk starts to escalate until they’re interrupted by Gyu-hyun. Gyu-hyun straight out asks Ji-uk if he is his father’s illegitimate child.
