Google Builds a Safer Digital Experience, Protect Users Under 18

By ilyalya 2 min read

Google has rolled out its age assurance technology in Malaysia to create safer, age-appropriate online experiences for young users.

The measure helps Google identify users who are likely under or over 18. Those estimated to be under 18 will automatically receive additional protections across Google products.

The move follows similar rollouts in Singapore, the United States and other markets.

What Protections Will Under-18 Users Get?

Google will apply several existing safety features by default to accounts it estimates belong to users under 18. These include:

  • SafeSearch filters: Turned on by default to filter explicit content.
  • Restrictions on mature content: Access to mature material on platforms such as Google Play and Gemini will be blocked.
  • Personalised ads: Personalised advertising will be prohibited for these users.
  • Google Maps privacy: Location Timeline will be disabled.
  • YouTube Digital Wellbeing: Break and bedtime reminders will be enabled to encourage healthier viewing habits.
  • Safer recommendations: Safeguards will limit repeated recommendations of certain types of content.

These protections aim to provide younger users with a safer experience while using Google’s services.

How Does Google’s Age Assurance Work?

Google uses two methods to determine a user’s age: age estimation and age verification.

Age estimation uses machine learning to analyse signals already associated with an account, such as the types of information a user searches for. This helps Google estimate whether someone is under or over 18 without collecting additional data.

If an adult is incorrectly identified as under 18, they can verify their age to manage their account settings. Google allows users to do this by uploading a photo of their government-issued ID or submitting a selfie.

What Happens If Google Gets Your Age Wrong?

Users identified as under 18 will receive notifications by email and while using Google products. These notifications explain the changes to their settings and how adults can verify their age if the estimate is incorrect.

Google says the initiative is part of its wider commitment to online safety. By combining age estimation with privacy-conscious verification options, the company aims to provide appropriate protections for younger users while allowing adults to access the services and information they need.
