Legendary British actor Sir Ian McKellen has shared a heartfelt tribute to his longtime friend and fellow X-Men star Sir Patrick Stewart, who passed away at the age of 86.

In an emotional Instagram post, McKellen reflected on their decades-long friendship, recalling Stewart’s humble beginnings, remarkable acting career and the personal qualities that made him deeply admired both on and off screen.

McKellen, who famously portrayed Magneto opposite Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, remembered his friend as a man of honesty, warmth and unwavering character.

The 87-year-old actor described Stewart as someone who remained deeply connected to his roots in Yorkshire, northern England, despite achieving international fame.

“He wore his heart on his sleeve,” McKellen wrote, adding that Stewart was someone he could rely on, admire and love.

One particularly touching memory shared by McKellen involved an encounter with Stewart in central London, years after the two first met as young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

During their conversation, Stewart revealed that he had been offered a leading role in the science-fiction television series Star Trek.

However, McKellen admitted that he initially expressed concerns about the opportunity, fearing that moving to Hollywood could put Stewart’s successful theatre career in Britain at risk.

Despite those concerns, Stewart ultimately accepted the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, a decision that would transform his career and introduce him to millions of fans worldwide.

Looking back, McKellen expressed gratitude that his friend had taken the chance.

Stewart went on to become an international star, captivating audiences through his performances in Star Trek, the X-Men films and numerous acclaimed theatre productions.

A Friendship That Spanned More Than Five Decades

McKellen and Stewart’s friendship began more than half a century ago, when both were ambitious young actors pursuing careers in theatre.

Although they did not initially appear in the same Royal Shakespeare Company productions, their paths continued to cross as they built successful acting careers.

Their friendship later became widely celebrated among fans, particularly after they portrayed two of Marvel’s most iconic mutants, Magneto and Professor X.

Beyond their work in Hollywood, both actors shared a deep appreciation for classical theatre, with Stewart continuing to perform in productions by renowned playwrights throughout his career.

McKellen also highlighted Stewart’s personal life, paying tribute to his wife, Sunny Ozell, whom he praised for standing by the actor through life’s challenges.

Despite making America his adopted home, McKellen noted that Stewart never forgot his Yorkshire roots.

He also recalled Stewart’s appointment as Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield as an achievement of which his friend was particularly proud.

Patrick Stewart’s Final Performance Still Awaits Fans

Towards the end of his tribute, McKellen acknowledged that audiences have yet to witness Stewart’s farewell performance in Marvel Studios’ upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday.

The highly anticipated movie is expected to feature Stewart reprising his beloved role as Professor Charles Xavier, giving Marvel fans another opportunity to see the legendary actor on screen.

For generations of audiences, Stewart will forever be remembered as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and the wise, compassionate leader of the X-Men.

However, McKellen’s moving tribute offered a more personal glimpse into the man behind those iconic characters — a loyal friend, a devoted husband and a proud Yorkshireman who remained true to his roots.

While the entertainment world mourns the loss of an extraordinary performer, Stewart’s legacy will continue to live on through his unforgettable characters and the friendships he built throughout his life.
