Xu, from Zhaotong, Yunnan, grew up without his parents and saved 167,500 yuan on his own for his wedding. However, he worried that the occasion would feel empty without family members to celebrate with him.

So, he turned to Douyin, China’s short-video platform, and invited strangers to share a wedding meal with him. He hoped their presence would help fill the room and allow him to hold his head high in his village.

Thousands Answered His Invitation

The post quickly gained attention, with thousands of people travelling from different parts of China to attend.

Guests arrived with food, flowers and gifts, while some even helped prepare meals, arrange tables and transport supplies. When Xu’s home could no longer accommodate everyone, local officials stepped in to help move the celebration to a larger venue.

A Wedding To Remember

On October 31, Xu married his bride, Chuichui, in front of the unexpected crowd. The couple exchanged rings, bowed before their guests and later joined them for a bonfire dance in traditional Miao clothing.

Despite the generosity, Xu declined cash gifts and instead reminded guests to keep their belongings safe and travel home carefully.

What started as an invitation to fill an otherwise quiet wedding became a celebration shared with thousands of people who had no personal connection to the couple, but showed up anyway.
