More Malaysian travellers are considering their environmental impact when planning holidays. From choosing greener transport to supporting local communities, sustainability is increasingly shaping travel decisions.
According to Trip.com Group’s 2026 Sustainable Travel Consumer Report, 93.5% of Malaysian respondents consider sustainability important when travelling. Meanwhile, 73.8% are intentionally choosing more sustainable travel options.
However, turning these intentions into action is not always easy. To make greener choices more accessible, Trip.com has introduced My Travel Impact, a new feature that tracks travellers’ sustainable choices in one place.
Extreme Weather Is Changing How Malaysians Travel
The report found that 81% of Malaysian respondents have had to adjust their travel plans due to extreme weather.
Environmental responsibility is the biggest motivation for sustainable travel, cited by 77.5% of respondents. Other reasons include preserving destinations for future generations (63.3%) and supporting local economies and communities (57.5%).
However, higher prices remain the biggest barrier (40%), followed by limited sustainable options (32%) and inconvenience (29.3%).
Trip.com Introduces My Travel Impact To Track Greener Choices
Available through the Trip.com app, My Travel Impact brings together travellers’ more sustainable choices across hotels, flights and rail in one dashboard.

The feature provides an overview of certified sustainable hotel stays and estimated emissions savings from transport choices.
Trip.com Group CEO Jane Sun said the travel industry shares a responsibility to protect destinations, nature and local communities. She added that the company aims to make sustainability part of the travel experience through lower-carbon transport, certified stays and personalised recommendations.
Track Your Sustainable Hotel Stays And Transport Choices
My Travel Impact covers three main aspects of a traveller’s journey:
- Hotels: Tracks nights spent at properties carrying Trip.com’s Certified Sustainable label, based on recognised third-party certification.
- Flights: Shows estimated emissions avoided through lower-emission flight choices, where comparable data is available. It uses the Travel Impact Model recommended by Travalyst.
- Rail: Estimates emissions savings from choosing trains instead of gasoline-powered cars, where comparable data is available.
By bringing these details together, travellers can better understand the impact of their choices throughout their journeys.
Malaysians Want More Sustainable Travel Options
The report also found that 85.5% of Malaysian respondents would consider more sustainable travel offerings when choosing a booking platform.
Their preferred features include sustainable travel tips (62.3%), clearer sustainability labels (49%) and AI-powered recommendations (36.5%).
Nature And Local Culture Remain Popular Travel Choices
Sustainable travel is also about enjoying more meaningful experiences.
More than half of respondents (54%) believe exploring nature and outdoor destinations would enhance their holidays. Experiencing authentic local culture follows at 48.8%.
Other popular choices include wildlife and nature conservation activities (35%) and destinations with fewer crowds (32%).
Working Towards More Sustainable Tourism
Trip.com Group continues working with industry partners to support more sustainable tourism practices.
These include the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and Travalyst, which support credible certification and consistent emissions information. The company also draws on responsible travel guidance from organisations such as WWF.
Through these collaborations, Trip.com Group aims to protect the destinations, natural environments and communities that make travel possible for future generations.
