Real Madrid is now on the top place of La Liga after beating Real Sociedad on Sunday with a 2-1 away victory. With the win, Real Madrid has intercept Barcelona’s position who is now in the second place in the Spanish title race.
But, the second half of the game was high on the controversy. Real Madrid’s captain, Sergio Ramos has scored the first goal with a penalty after Vinicius Jr falls to the ground in the area after making a contact with Sociedad’s Diego Llorente.
The controversy starts when Sociedad thoughts they have tied the score later with a goal by Adnan Januzaj. But the goal was ruled out after a VAR review showed Mikel Merino prevent the view of Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois.
Karim Benzema double the score for Madrid at 71st minute. Although Sociedad then scores a goal with outstanding finish by Merino in 83rd minute, it is already too late for them to tie the score.
“We’re angry with everything but mainly with the way we lost because the little details and the big moments went against us,” said Merino.
“I was at least five meters from Courtois when I was flagged offside. I don’t know if the same thing would have happened had it been in the other area but the flag went up and we feel that we have been wronged,” he added.
But, Madrid midfielder Federico Velverde claims that his team deserves the three points.
“In my opinion, we were the superior team against a very tough opponent, we knew how to cope with them and how to hold on to our lead,” said Velverde.
“We’re so happy because it was such a hard game and when you win a game like that you should enjoy it,” added Velverde.
