South Korean Kids Suspected COVID-19 Had Another Disease

It is been reported that two children in South Korea suspected to be the first cases of a life-threatening syndrome that related to COVID-19 and was contracted with Kawasaki disease.

According to the statement by health authorities on Wednesday, it is a similar disease but separate infection. Last week, The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) has doing investigations on two suspected cases of the “Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome in Children” (MIS-C).

MIS-C also referred to as ‘Pediatric Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome Potentially Associated with COVID-19’ has been reported in Italy, Spain, France, Britain, and the United States.

MIS-C symptoms were similar to Kawasaki disease and even toxic shock. The symptoms such as fever, swollen glands, rashes, and even heart inflammation.

As stated by KCDC director, Jeong Eun-Kyeong, the investigation that has been done showed that the two patients, an 11 years old boy and a 4 years old girl, had suffered Kawasaki disease and shock syndrome.

She said that both of the children were tested negative for COVID-19 and were released from the hospital after getting treatment.

“After consulting an expert panel, we determined that neither of the two cases corresponds to MIS-C,” said the KCDC director.

“We’re also examining a third suspected case that has been reported, though chances are low that it is MIS-C.” she added.

A professor from Sungkyunkwan University’s medical school who also consulted the KCDC, Kim Ye-jin stated that the expert panel was still doing more research because the link between MIS-C and COVID-19 has not been clearly established globally.
