India is said to be using the legendary Eden Gardens cricket stadium in Kolkata as the quarantine center for the country’s police, which suffered from COVID-19.

With a shortage of hospitals, hundreds of beds will be set up in the 80,000-capacity stadium that was once used in the 1987 World Cup final.

CNA reported that nearly 550 Kolkata police have tested positive for COVID-19 and two have died.

“It is our duty to help and support the administration in this hour of crisis. The quarantine facility will be used for police personnel who are COVID-19 warriors,” said Avishek Dalmiya, president of the Cricket Association of Bengal.

The stadium was also used by the Kolkata Knight Riders Indian Premier League team but this year’s tournament was repeatedly postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Until now, the total cases of the virus across India have increased to 850,000 cases with more than 22,000 deaths.
