Malaysian Government Supports Freedom of Media and Social Media; The FINAS Act Will Be Amended

The Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Dato ‘Saifuddin Abdullah through a media statement recently informed that the Malaysian government supports the freedom of the media and social media.

According to him, the cabinet has agreed and decided that social media users are free to use existing platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and so on, including producing and uploading videos as usual.

He added that the government will also amend the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation Act 1981 (Act 244) taking into account the current situation.

As what is stated by Dato ‘Saifuddin Abdullah on his Twitter account, below are the things that the Cabinet has agreed and decided:

  • The Malaysian government reaffirms its stand to uphold the principles of media freedom and the right of individual freedom on social media sites.
  • Social media users are free to use existing platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and so on, including producing and uploading videos as usual without having to apply for a license or worry about being sued by FINAS.
  • The Government will amend the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation Act 1981 [Act 244] taking into account the current situation.

“As I announced on June 20, 2020, the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) has begun efforts to amend the acts under the supervision of the Ministry to suit the current situation,” he said

“The government will begin the process of amending the acts in the near future,” added Dato ‘Saifuddin Abdullah
