First Prayers In Hagia Sophia Lead 500 People Diagnosed With COVID-19

Last month, a historic event took place in Turkey when the historic site of Hagia Sophia, formerly known as a museum, was converted into a mosque by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Ayasofya in Turkish terms, the change form a museum to a Turkish landmark mosque is a source of pride for Muslims and its president wants outsiders to visit Hagia Sophia as a mosque.

The excitement of Muslims to pray in the historic building saw a total of 350,000 Muslims present for the first time during Friday prayers on July 24, without strict and social imprisonment.

Since the opening of the mosque, 500 individuals have been infected with COVID-19 including the journalists who covered the historic day.

This happened because there was no social distancing and a lot of people not wearing a face mask.

Health professionals contacted by the media said the pandemic had worsened in the last month, and that the opening of Hagia Sophia for prayers without appropriate and tough precautions in place was a reason for the surge.
