If you by chance can go to Japan, don’t forget to visit Tokorozawa, a city near Tokyo. The authorities in the city are decorating the plain manhole into an artwork. They are featuring anime characters onto the manhole.

This will attract the passerby and anime enthusiasts as the decorated manhole will be reachable in some of Japan’s streets.

Junichi Koike, a city official stated that they are Japan’s first illuminated manhole covers. The authorities are hoping that the decorated manhole can become another attraction to the visitors. The city is giving much effort in improving the image of its sewerage system. It is hoped that this will improve the dirty and smelly image of manholes and gain visitors to revitalize the local economy.

The city official said that manhole enthusiasts enjoy discovering different kinds of manhole covers. They are sharing information on social media about their favorite versions of the manhole covers.

Famous anime characters were featured on 28 manhole covers throughout the city. The illuminated covers will light up between 6 pm to 2 am using solar power. The illuminated manhole will stay in place as long as the firm that is sponsoring the project continues to pay for it.
