Pfunds Molkerei ‘The World’s Most Beautiful Dairy Shop’ That Survived World War 2

Germany, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the German city called Pfunds Molkerei with an estimation of over 500,000 tourists stopping by every year. This is because it gives you historical and luxury feelings like when you come inside the most pompously adorned room Versailles just to buy a piece of cheese or some yogurt.

This dairy store has more of a palace vibe, although some say it looks much better than most palace interiors and details in every corner are amazing. Decorated with ceramic tiles produced by Villeroy & Boch and hand-painted in the Neo-Renaissance style by local artists in 1998. Also, Pfunds Molkerei was awarded the title of “World’s Most Beautiful Dairy Shop” by Guinness Records.

The history side of Pfunds Molkerei can be traced back to 1879 when a German farmer Paul Pfund moved from Reinholdshain to Dresden with his six cows and just as many pigs. He then set up a small dairy business on Görlitzer Straße, whereat the time people can observe how the cows were milked and how the milk was prepared for sale. A year after, Paul’s brother, the actor Friedrich Pfund, joined the business and together they founded the Dresdner Gebrüder Pfund dairy.

In 1893, Friedrich Pfund died but Paul’s sons, Kurt and Mac, later joined the company and help the brand grow. At first, the modest dairy processed 150 liters of milk every day, things changed in 1930, where they process over 60,000 daily. With the excess milk, Pfund became the first condensed milk producer in Germany, and also started selling baby formula and milk soap.

The shop miraculously survived the Dresden bombings from World War 2, and still continued operating until 1978. It was only in 1995 that the dairy shop once again opened its doors for the customers. Since then, the extraordinary shop has become a globally-recognized landmark of Dresden.
