Two Friends Drown During Morning Swim

KUALA NERUS, Aug 21  — School holidays turned to tragedy for seven friends who went for morning exercise at the Kampung Tanjung beach in Seberang Takir here, when two of them were found drowned.

Kuala Nerus Fire and Rescue station chief Yusmizan Yusof said in the 7 am incident, Muhammad Amirul Zulkafli, 15, and Muhammad Aidil Ashman Abdul Manan, 16, upon returning from jogging, went for a swim at the beach when the tide was low and failed to notice that the water level suddenly increased due to high tide.

“We received an emergency call at 7.37 am and 14 personnel from the Kuala Nerus station, with assistance from the Kuala Terengganu Water Rescue Team, were rushed to the scene.

“Both bodies were found at the same location at 9 am, about 50 metres from the shore,” he told reporters at the location.

The bodies were handed over to the police and were taken to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for further action.

Meanwhile, in KEMAMAN, septuagenarian Othman Said, 79, who was reported missing after going to his orchard in Pasir Manggang on Wednesday, was found drowned at 7.39 am today.

Kemaman district police chief Supt Hanyan Ramlan, in a statement, said that the victim’s body was found floating and stuck to tree branches in Sungai Kemaman.

“The victim was said to have crossed the river on a sampan to return home after cleaning his orchard, but the sampan was believed to have capsized due to the strong current,” he said.

The victim’s body was sent to the Kemaman Hospital for a post mortem.
