Aogashima Island With A Village That Was Built In An Active Volcano

Who would have thought that an island in Japan that was once affected by a huge volcanic eruption is now a beautiful village for about 170 people.

Although Aogashima was left unoccupied for 50 years after the May 1785 eruption, there are still people who choose to live there.

For them, the incident in 1785 that caused the formation of the earth as it is today is a history that is always engraved in the memory. More than half of the island’s 327 residents were reported killed as they did not have time to escape the tragedy.

In fact, the Japanese Meteorological Department classifies the mountain among the 110 active volcanoes in Japan.

Even so, they still choose to live in the peaceful and harmonious village.

Now, Aogashima has become one of the camping sites for tourists who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Not only that, the location also has bird watching activities by helicopter and climbing Maruyama, the island’s inner crater.

Many people might wonder how to get to the Aogashima Island? For information, the island can only be reached by air or boat from Hachijojima Island, Tokyo.

  • From Hachijojima by boat: Boats take 3 hours. Note that service can be affected by inclement weather.
  • From Hachijojima by helicopter: Flights time: 20 minutes. Reservations are required.
