A simple act of kindness might look a bit awkward to other people. However, people nowadays are looking for ways to improve their life. It is believed that acts of kindness can lead to happiness. Thus, to live a happier life, we should do good deeds and make it a habit in our life.
A study conducted by a team of experts shows that being generous can make people happier. A simple, random act of generosity can activate neurons in an area of the brain, which is associated with happiness. There are about 200 studies on generosity, researchers from the University of Hong Kong revealed.
It is found that by doing an unplanned act of kindness brings more benefits than a regular volunteering activity. Even though the effect size from the study is small, it was still an amazing finding to see people perform acts of kindness every day.
The author of the study explained that a more casual and spontaneous kindness may form a social engagement easier. To build a harmonious and well-functioning society, compassion and cooperation are needed. With a random act of kindness, it will develop the society to care for each other, and thus, it builds harmony.
Researchers said that a planned or scheduled kindness may become stale or monotonous than random kindness. Doing good can also affect mental and physical wellbeing. However, future research will be done to examine whether prosociality is always a good thing or it has an ‘ideal level’ of prosociality.
