Libya’s UN-Backed PM Says To Step Down In October

TRIPOLI, Sept. 17– Fayez al Sarraj, the UN-backed prime minister of Libya, on Wednesday announced his intention to step down in October, reported Xinhua news agency.

“I call on the Dialogue Committee, which is the body charged with forming the new executive authority, to assume its historic responsibility to expedite the formation of authority so that we can all ensure a peaceful and smooth transition of power,” Serraj said in a televised speech.

Sarraj welcomed the recent UN-sponsored consultations between key Libyan stakeholders and expressed hope for more consensus and agreement.

Sarraj’s UN-backed government was formed in 2015 based on an UN-sponsored political agreement that aimed to end the political division in the country.

However, Libya remains politically divided amid insecurity and chaos, despite the signed agreement.
