People Call Changi Airport ‘Haven’ After Allowing Homeless Rest In Lounge Area

Singapore, on 15 September, a Singaporean activist who runs an NGO that gives counseling to unemployed people, Gilbert Goh, shared a heartwarming story on his Facebook account about Changi airport. Goh went to the airport and find many homeless people resting in the lounge area.

“Shocked to see so many homeless folks holing up in our airport lounge during yesterday’s blanket/sleeping bag distribution though silently glad that they have a safe clean place to rest their tired bodies away from the cold weather outside,” said Goh.

He said there were about 15 homeless at the airport and said that they were all sitting while resting and that there was only one elderly uncle who was sleeping on the cold floor.

Most of the homeless were men in their fifties and sixties. There are also a few of the men who were properly dressed which makes Goh believes that some of them must only have jobs on the days but can’t support their housing financial.

“The airport is always a haven for the homeless community due to its clean hygiene environment and more so for its safety factor,” he said.

“I just want to take this opportunity to thank the airport management for their compassion in allowing them to rest at the lounge – it speaks volumes of their love and commitment towards a more caring society,” he added.
