Ringgit Damage, These How You Should Handle To Make It Lasts Longer

In 2012, Central Bank of Malaysia (BNM) introduced RM1 and RM5 polymer banknotes in Malaysia’s fourth currency series. For those who do not know, besides being durable and not easily torn, polymer banknotes do not absorb water, easier to handle and last longer.

Did you know, if polymer banknotes are handled properly, they can be used for a longer period of time? Below are the ways of how to handling polymer banknotes properly:

  • Keep polymer banknotes FLAT in your wallet.
  • CLEAN polymer banknotes if dirty.
  • Use PAPER BANDS when packing polymer banknotes.

Not just that, you must also avoid the following steps in handling polymer banknotes:

  • DO NOT fold polymer banknotes repeatedly (e.g. as decoration) as it will leave permanent folding marks.
  • DO NOT crumple polymer banknotes.
  • DO NOT staple, use sharp instruments on, or pin polymer banknotes.
  • DO NOT directly expose polymer banknotes to high temperatures.

According to BNM, a Malaysian banknote is considered fit for recirculation if it meets all of the following criteria:

  • Genuine and not counterfeit
  • Free from holes, tears, tape or missing portion
  • Has uniform brightness and free from excessive soiling
  • Free from ink-wear, particularly on the portrait of SPB Yang di-Pertuan Agong
  • Free from defacement

Additionally, banknotes and coins that are no longer suitable for circulation actually can be exchanged at any bank and Bank Negara Malaysia Office.
