Subang’s Students Win Big At Innovation Awards With Their Covid-19 Herbal Mask And Purifying Oil

Recently, nine students from the SJKT Ladang Ebor that is located in Subang Jaya, Selangor have innovatively and creatively come up with ways to aid the public on how to stay safe during this Covid-19 Pandemic situation. Their latest innovation could absolutely help all the people out there to stay safe while they are still in comfort.

One group from this particular school has successfully won both the Diamond and also the Gold awards at one competition that is the  Virtual Invention, Innovation and Design Pharm-IIDEx 2020. The mentioned competition was completely organized by the Universiti Teknologi Mara’s pharmacy faculty.

The member of the group would be the twelve-year-olds Keertikaa Jega Jeevan, Janany Vikneswaran, Gautam Reddy Chandran and also Prathees Selvam. They have creatively designed a washable three-ply mask. This particular mask has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. The innovative part of their mask that they called “Super Shield Face Mask” is that the mask comes with changeable filters of herbal patches that are completely derived only from natural ingredients including ginger and turmeric.

Another group from this particular school would be the twelve-year-old Anusha Muthaiyan, Kaalishwaridewi Vadivelan, Tarmesh Mohan, Marthiny Poobalan, and Madan Vicram Jayaghanes that has successfully bagged the Bronze award for their innovation that they called “Herbal Air Purifying Oil”. The oil that they have created was produced wholly from six herbal ingredients with anti-inflammatory properties. According to the group, this purifying oil can always be used to scent the living areas and also workspaces.

The president of SJKT Ladang Ebor Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Jega Jeevan Elumalai mentioned that the intention for these students to come up with this type of innovation is to help Malaysians cope with the new norms in Malaysia. He also added that the students’ achievements were the outcome of their hard work and perseverance as they are guided by their science teachers.

Jega Jeevan Elumalai said, “This is the second time our students have participated in this competition. Previously, we managed to win only one award. But this year, we are so proud to see our students bring home three awards.”

Other than that, he also said that the PTA was mulling to improvise the students’ inventions and eventually commercialize the products out there. He also added, “For instance, we are planning to offer more choices of herbal patches, such as basil and curry leaves, for the face mask,”

“If we can commercialize these products, we can provide more cost-effective solutions for Malaysian households to make their living environment safer.”
