The new date for the Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to begin on 23 July 2021 until 8 August 2021. The event will still be officially called the “2020 Summer Olympics” even though it will happen in 2021.

John Coates, the International Olympic Committee vice president said in an interview that the Olympics will take place with or without COVID. By any means, he is confident to proceed with the event within the new time frame despite the slow progress on the COVID-19 vaccines.

Even though the disease might not be contained or vaccine available by next year, the International Olympic Committee believed that the Tokyo Olympics can handle the disease. They will be all set to do anything to prevent the spread of the virus during the event.

However, Coates didn’t address how participating nations and athletes feel about his statement. Before the Tokyo Olympics were postponed, the Canadian and Australian teams had decided not to participate in the event.
