The world has been dealing with a lot of natural disasters this year. We are aware enough that the world is getting older and older.
The first to come this year is the coronavirus pandemic. The researchers are still looking for the antivirus to keep all people from being infected by the virus. Later this year, the U.S. has been warned with death threatening hurricanes and the country is preparing to face major damage.
Another crisis that is happening to the world is the melting of the ice sheet in Greenland and Antarctica. Tom Slater, a climate researcher at the Centre for Polar Observation and Modeling at the University of Leeds stated that the melting of the ice sheet has resulted in the rising of the sea level and the rate is getting faster than we could imagine.
The global sea level has raised by 1.8cm in the past two decades. The melting rate of the ice sheet matches the scientists’ worst-case scenario forecasts. Now, the sea level rises by 4mm every year.
According to Anna Hogg, the study co-author and climate researcher said that we should expect a 17cm rise in sea level from the melting of ice sheets alone. The rise in sea level can also be caused by the thermal expansion where water gets warmer and expands.
However, in the last five years, the melting of ice sheets and mountain glaciers has become the main contributing factor to the rise of sea level. Countries worldwide have been warned to face the risk of flooding because of this climate crisis.
