Like many other phishing scams featured on this site, friends-and-family imposter scams are common. These scams usually begin with a phone call impersonating a friend or relative.
The fraudster may call you and pretend to be your friend or relative, claiming to have been in an emergency and needing quick funds. Scammers will act quickly and try to get money before you realize it is a scam.
Recently, a tweet went viral about the dangers of scammers disguising themselves to be his friends, shares by DinieAmani_.
“The scammers will say that their family member has some financial problem, and will ask you to deposit certain money into an account named ‘Siti cleaning services’. Please spread so your friends will be aware,” she said in her tweet.
Following the thread, Dinie said that the scammer will not stick to one number, and will use any means to prove that they are who they claim to be.
May we all be more careful of the dangers lurking out there, even if it’s involving someone you know and care about.
