Penang Hill Cable Car Project Receives Overwhelming Response

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 26  — The proposed Penang Hill Cable Car project has received overwhelming support from the public, according to State Housing, Local Government, and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo.

Jagdeep Singh said about 95 percent out of 2,000 respondents in the first round of the survey are in favor of the planned cable car project.

“The survey was conducted over a two-year period but the (feedback) process will be ongoing and we welcome all views (from the public),” he told reporters after officiating the Penang Hill Draft Special Area Plan (SAP) 2020 (Replacement) public display here today.

According to the Penang Hill SAP (Substitution), a total of seven locations were proposed for the lower station of the cable car project, namely Teluk Bahang, Balik Pulau, Rifle Club, Youth Park, Turf Club, Penang Hill Lower Station, and Paya Terubong.

The proposed landing spots for the cable car’s upper stations on the hill include a site near the entrance of The Habitat, behind Penang Hill Mosque, behind Penang Hill police station, and next to the Penang Hill Upper Station.

On Oct 16, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow told the State Legislative Assembly that the government will issue a request for proposal (RFP) for the Penang Hill Cable Car project in November this year.

Chow added that the project was expected to take between three and four years to complete and begin operations.

Meanwhile, on the Penang Hill SAP (Substitution) public display, Jagdeep said review counters would be set up in three locations namely, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Hallway at Level 3, Komtar; Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) Hallway, and the Penang Hill Lower Station between Oct 26 and Dec 28.

“The Draft SAP is also available online at www.jpbd.penang.gov.my. We hope that the public would submit their feedback within this two months period,” he said.
