Following the declining trend in the number of users shown over the past few years, Yahoo Groups reportedly decided to stop operations starting December 15 this year.
Yahoo Groups is one of the products under the Yahoo website.
It is believed that the decision was announced on Tuesday by Verizon, a leading U.S. wireless service provider, which bought Yahoo in 2017.
Yahoo Group’s service, which was launched in 2001, however, is seen as having difficulty competing with the emergence of various other social platforms including Reddit, Google Groups, and Facebook Groups.
Starting October 12, the function of creating new groups on the platform will be deactivated and on October 15, users will no longer be able to send or receive emails from Yahoo Groups.
The website is also no longer working. However, Yahoo Mail still works as usual. Verizon invested about USD4.8 billion when it bought Yahoo.
