On December 31, DYMM Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has given his consent to rename Jalan Universiti in Petaling Jaya, Selangor with the name JALAN PROF DIRAJA UNGKU AZIZ.
This street name change will be implemented immediately.
Through a post on the official Facebook of Selangor Royal Office, His Majesty consented to perpetuate the name of the prominent country on the road to commemorate the services and contributions of the late Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz Ungku Abdul Hamid during his lifetime in the field of education and the Malay economy.
“The selection of Jalan Universiti to be renamed to JALAN PROF DIRAJA UNGKU AZIZ is appropriate because it is the main gateway to higher learning institutions such as the University of Malaya, International Islamic University and MAHSA University,” said Sultan of Selangor Private Secretary Datuk Muhamad Munir Bani.
For the record, the late Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz served as a lecturer at the University of Malaya (Singapore) from 1952-1961, before being appointed to the position of professor and then Dean, Faculty of Economics and Administration, University of Malaya (Kuala Lumpur) from 1962- 1965.
The 3.2-kilometer Jalan Universiti is one of the main roads connecting Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur, built-in 1960.
