A Historic ‘Batai Laut’ Tree Over 100 Years Old In Melaka Collapsed

After more than 100 years standing strong in Melaka, the iconic and also historical tree that would always be the focus of tourists from all over the world when they visit there finally fell towards the ground. That is usually the place where tourists will immortalize their memories of being in the Stadthuys Building or known as the ‘red building’. According to a report, it, unfortunately, collapsed because of strong wind with a speed of 6 km/h on Wednesday.

The Batai Laut type of tree or the scientific name is known as ‘Peltophorum Pterocarpum’ measured to be 18 meters tall and almost 1.5 meters in diameter that was planted since the British era has fallen around 6.30 in the morning. Based on history, it was planted along with the water teeth of the Straits of Malacca as symbolic of the boundaries of the area.

According to the Facebook post,

“MBMB is in the process of cleaning up and is expected to be completed this afternoon. Replanting works of the same type of trees will also be done to replace these fallen trees. The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and MBMB’s F.RON.T Unit have been on site for public safety and traffic control purposes”.

“A lot of citizens of the city have expressed their sadness over the loss of this historical and nostalgic heritage tree”.
