Kelantan Landfill Catches Fire

JELI, March 11  — A 1.61-hectare (four-acre) landfill in Kampung Sungai Mekong near here has been ablaze since yesterday, causing several nearby villages to be affected by thick plumes of smoke.

Jeli Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Adni Ibrahim said the incident was believed to have started yesterday at 8 pm.

He said a team rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at about 9.30 pm

Mohd Adni said the fire-fighting operation started yesterday but had to be called off due to poor visibility at night as well as thick smoke.

“The operation resumed at 8 am today involving 15 firefighters and six personnel from the Jeli District Council.

“An excavator is also used to dig up the rubbish in order to completely extinguish the fire,” he said when contacted by Bernama, today.
