Movie Review: Exhilarating Broadway Musical Movie of ‘The Prom’

‘The Prom’ is actually a 2020 American musical comedy film directed by Ryan Murphy and adapted to the screen by Chad Beguelin and also Bob Martin, from their and Matthew Sklar’s 2018 Broadway musical of the same name. The film stars would be Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells, Jo Ellen Pellman, Ariana DeBose, Tracey Ullman, Kevin Chamberlin, Mary Kay Place and also Kerry Washington.

It is about a group of down-on-their-luck Broadway stars who shake up a small Indiana town as they rally behind a teen who just wants to attend prom with her girlfriend. ‘The Prom’ is billed as a musical comedy because people sing in it while making funny faces.

What ‘The Prom’ Is About

‘The Prom’ focuses on three Broadway stars that are Dee Dee Allen who is a diva belter in the spirit of Patti LuPone, Barry Glickman who is a comedy sidekick-type with a touch of Nathan Lane’s manic-depressive energy and also Angie Dickinson who echoes Bernadette Peters’ uncanny ability to continue playing kewpie-doll-adorable lead parts even though she should’ve theoretically aged out of them. Dee Dee and Barry just appeared in a new musical about the Roosevelts that closed after opening night, following weak advance sales and harsh reviews.

They need to find a new energy source to feed their narcissism, so they seize on a controversy in a small, conservative Indiana town, where a female teen has been denied the right to take her sweetheart Alyssa Greene to the prom. A Sardi’s bartender and recent Juilliard graduate named Trent Oliver tells the Broadway trio that if they’re hell-bent on getting in the middle of the prom situation and dusting it with their limousine liberal magic, they can hop on the bus that’s about to take him through Indiana as part of a non-Equity tour of Godspell. Free transportation.

What Can Be Said About ‘The Prom’

The movie hits pleasure spots for devoted theatergoers, mixing self-deprecating observations about how fatuous and self-serving performers can get when they dabble in politics. The blocking, framing, and camera movement in this movie give the viewers a good look at the performers, often from head-to-toe and he pulls off a couple of dandy flourishes.

Everything about ‘The Prom’ movie is perfect, from the cast to the costumes and the singing, dancing, color, and set. It’s just perfect. The diversity and representation in this movie also is incredible. ‘The Prom’ is full of an excellent cast and some of the catchiest songs ever. The actors had some of the hardest characters to play and played it so well.
