Movie Review: Unexpected And Gruesome Death Scene In Filipino Movie ‘Eerie’

Eerie is actually a 2019 Filipino Horror, Mystery, and also Thriller movie written and directed by Mikhail Red. The particular movie starring Bea Alonzo and Charo Santos-Concio. The movie uses elements of suspense writing and follows a clairvoyant guidance counselor called Pat Consolacion. She embarks on solving the mysterious death of a student at the Catholic school, Sta. Lucia Academy for girls.

It was first released in Singapore as a premiere during the one and only ‘Singapore International Film Festival’. The scary movie also was released in the Philippines on March 27, 2019. It is about when a student’s suicide rattles an all-girls Catholic school, a clairvoyant guidance counselor leans on a ghost to uncover the convent’s abusive past.

What ‘Eerie’ Is About

Patricia Consolacion is a guidance counselor of the Sta. Lucia Academy for girls. This is an exclusive all-girls private school run by Catholic nuns. Patricia’s affection for the students has caused her to independently make her own investigation about the suicide of a student named Erika. This was done without notice of the Head Teacher named Sor Alice. Students of the academy are traumatized by the occasional apparitions of Erika’s ghost. Anna, another student, is sent home after this experience when she ventures alone at midnight where Erika supposedly hanged herself.

The unexpected and gruesome death of the student threatens the existence of an old Catholic school for girls. Pat Consolacion involves herself with the students to help them cope. She also helps uncover the mysteries of the student’s death. Most students suspect it is the strict and borderline abusive Mother Alice. This is because she also threatened Pat’s tenure in the school because of her continuous meddling with the case. But Pat’s unusual talents lead her to know Eri, a former student who has been watching the whole school for years. Pat uncovers the secret of the school and the monster that is nurtured for the past century.

What Can Be Said About ‘Eerie’

The audio and visual quality of the movie was stunning, especially being a Filipino horror movie. By far one of the best ones so far. The beginning was great and there is also a lot of jumps scares that is truly satisfying for the viewers. The movie creates an eerie atmosphere, showing that Philippine horror has evolved. Of course, gone were the days of long-haired pale-skinned ghosts crawling out of the TV. It’s time to open the floodgates for themes that may well come under sacrilege, in a country of Catholics.

Though, to be fair, there’s no sacrilege here as the only religious element involved is the fact that the school is run by nuns and one of the main mysterious characters is a nun. One thing why this movie also did well in the box office and in the critics is for the longest time, a horror film, that could actually be called a decent horror film, was offered to the masses. Because infidelity stories sell so much like hotcakes here.
