What Important Things You Should Know About AstraZeneca Vaccine In Malaysia

Recently, there has been a lot of news on registration for vaccines going around in Malaysia. This is because the government has opened so many slots for the citizens to register for the AstraZeneca vaccine starting officially on the 2nd of May 2021. In Malaysia, there are so many different vaccines that are used for the Vaccination Program.

Some of them are the Pfizer vaccine, CoronaVac vaccine, and also AstraZeneca vaccine. To enhance the understanding and also to avoid misunderstanding of these vaccines, these are some of the information that you really need to know about the particular AstraZeneca vaccine that is getting so much attention from the citizens lately.

Effectiveness Of The Vaccine

  • Phase 3 clinical trials in the US reveal that out of 32,449 participants:
    • 76% efficiency against symptomatic Covid-19.
    • Zero severe or critical infections reported, 8 were reported in the placebo group.
    • This means that the vaccine is 100% effective in preventing severe COVID-19 and keeping you out of hospitals.
  • For 64 years and older:
    • 85% efficiency against symptomatic Covid-19.

About Blood Clots

  • It is an event called Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS).
  • In most patients, clots are associated with low platelet counts which is a rare phenomenon.
  • Platelets are supposed to help with blood clotting but in this case, are abnormally observed to be lower in levels when the clotting occurs.
  • Doctors can help patients recover if the signs of blood clots and low blood platelets are recognized and treated early.
  • Symptoms include:
    • breathlessness
    • pain in the chest or stomach
    • swelling or coldness in a leg
    • severe or persistent headaches or blurred vision
    • tiny blood spots under the skin beyond the site of the injection

Weight The Risks

  • Age and health profile.
    • If you are of older age or suffer from underlying illnesses such as high BP, cardio diseases, type 2 diabetes, or obesity, you are at greater risk of serious COVID-19 disease or death. Given the higher risk profile, taking the vaccine is especially advised.
  • Stressed healthcare system.
    • Because of the stressed healthcare system, it is critical for more people to get vaccinated to reduce this strain. If you do get infected in the near future, available health resources are finite and dwindling.
  • Risks of Long COVID.
    • It is the phenomenon where people continue to experience symptoms of COVID-19 and do not fully recover for several weeks or months.
