Instead of Green, This Is Why ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Drax Is Gray

James Gunn, the man behind Guardians of the Galaxy explained why Drax is gray on-screen. Drax the Destroyer made his first appearance in 2012’s Guardians of the Galaxy and it was played by former WWE star, Dave Bautista. Since then, Drax the Destroyer appeared again in the 2017 sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, and two Avengers movies, Infinity War and Endgame. Drax is said to be included in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Last month, Bautista shocked fans when he confirmed that Vol. 3 will be his last Guardians movie due to the shirtless scenes.

I’m going to be 54 years old by the time Guardians 3 comes out, and the shirtless thing is getting harder and harder for me,” Bautista says.

“The journey has come full circle and I’m just ready to kind of step aside and wrap it up.”

Another signature part of the character’s appearance is the gray skin, mainly because the comic version of Drax is actually bright green. Some Marvel fans have even debated the color of Drax’s skin on-screen. Sometimes it looks grey or blue and some other times it looks a combination of the two.

Previously, Gunn has cleared up the confusion by saying that Drax is gray but can appear blue or green depends on the lighting. Now, after a fan reached out to the director on Twitter, asking about the change of Drax’s skin colors. Gunn responded by saying there were too many green characters in the MCU and after multiple screen tests, he decided that gray skin looks best on Drax.

Here is Gunn’s complete response:
