Ukraine’s Couple Chained Themselves Only To Go Their Separate Ways After 123 Days

As the last resort of trying to fix their relationship, a Ukrainian couple decided to get handcuffed together but after 123 days, they split up saying the chained phase had revealed uncomfortable truths.

On Valentine’s Day, this young couple from the eastern city of Kharkiv made international headlines for chaining their hands together. The plan was to go three months with their hands chained together at all times. This includes bathroom breaks and showers. They even had to plan their day ahead so that both could carry out their routines. Well, they lasted three months but went their separate ways as soon as the chain was taken off.

Throughout the experiment, they documented everything they did together from grocery shopping to cigarette breaks. The 29-year-old girlfriend who initially was against the handcuff idea shed tears while discussing the latest break-up.

“I think it will be a good lesson for us, for other Ukrainian couples and couples abroad not to repeat what we have done,” she told Reuters in an interview in Kyiv.

She said she missed the personal space the most and she felt her boyfriend was not paying enough attention to her despite the close distance between them.

“We have different views on many issues. On one hand, it does not bother us and we don’t suppress each other,” the boyfriend told Reuters. “But on the other hand, we are not like-minded people, we are not on the same wavelength, we are totally different.”

They had the chain removed in front of Ukrainian TV news channels and a representative from a Ukrainian record book, that confirmed no couple had managed a similar feat. After that, they decided to sell the handcuffs in an online auction where part of the money will be donated to charity.

Their last photo on Instagram, where they have more than 7,800 followers, showed the couple standing apart, looking down at the floor.
