Book Review: Learn To Accept Yourself From ‘Love For Imperfect Things’ By Haemin Sunim

An extract from Haemin Sunim’s second book which crossed selling four million copies. The author is a South Korean Buddhist teacher who is also the founder of a non-profit organization, the School for Broken Hearts. He studied in the United States where it benefits him as he has experienced both the Western and Eastern culture. That is also a major reason why he could relate to the lives of busy Western people.

“When you care for yourself first, the world will also find you worthy of care.”

Originally, this book was written in Korean and then was translated into English by Deborah Smith. With great illustrations by Lisk Feng that could picture the mood and emotions of the author, this book is truly a beautiful piece from inside and out.

On Goodreads, this book received an average rating of 4.40/5 from 572 ratings. A reader rated 5 stars and left a comment that says, “Really got a lot from this book, and am now starting to put some of the readings into action. This book was a help for me when I needed it!”.

What Is It About

This self-help book was divided into eight chapters where each one focuses on different subjects. The first chapter talks about taking care of yourself and followed by family, empathy, and relations. Haemin Sunim also wrote about courage, healing, enlightenment, and the most important part, acceptance.

What makes Love for Imperfect Things different and better than any self-help book is that, rather than sounding preachy, Haemin Sunim spoke using his words intimately that can inspire the readers. He also included his own journey throughout his life. The book is filled with words of wisdom and reminders of self-care that will help the readers in today’s fast-paced world. One remarkable lesson that readers can learn from this book is that we are not perfect and we live in an imperfect world, but we have to accept and be kind to ourselves by finding the good in all things.
