In humans, this includes head lice, scabies, river blindness, and many others. In veterinary medicine, it is used to prevent and treat heartworm and also acariasis, among other indications. It can be taken by mouth or applied to the skin for external infestations.

The FDA has not approved ivermectin for use in treating or preventing COVID-19 in humans. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends not to use ivermectin in patients with COVID-19, except in clinical trials. It is not known whether ivermectin will harm an unborn baby. Ivermectin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Other than that, Ivermectin also should not be given to a child who weighs less than 33 pounds.
