Throughout the film, there are numerous moving moments. When the dolphin is rescued, it has lost its tail due to an accident with a crab trap. The dolphin has a prosthetic tail and is cared for by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The 2011 family film was loosely inspired on the true story of Winter the dolphin, who was without a tail.

Winter, the 16-year-old dolphin that lived at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, had a gastrointestinal blockage, according to reports. She died of abrupt heart failure while being treated by a team of veterinarians and technicians.

The team was advised that a necropsy would be performed to determine the cause of death, although they assume it was heart failure at this time.
