As one of the tech giants, Apple has published a security guide for its newest AirTag tracking gadget. Small devices like coins act as trackers to keep an eye on things like keys, wallets, and backpacks. The price is not too expensive to buy. Unfortunately, this new breakthrough makes them an attractive tool for stalkers looking to follow their targets.
Due to that Apple has recently has updated the functions of the AirTag tracking gadget. In a statement by Apple that said, “AirTag was designed to help people locate their personal belongings, not to track people or another person’s property, and we condemn in the strongest possible terms any malicious use of our products”. These are all the updates that have been taken by Apple to make sure that there is no misuse with AirTag:
1) Setting Up AirTag With New Privacy Warnings
Every user setting up their AirTag for the first time will see a message that clearly states that AirTag is meant to track their own belongings. Using AirTag to track people without their consent is a crime in many regions around the world. Other than that, AirTag is designed only to be detected by the victims. New updates enable law enforcement to be able to request identifying information about the AirTag owner in an upcoming software update.
2) AirPods Alert Issues Would Be Addressed
Apple has received reports of users receiving an “Unknown Accessory Detected” alert. The company also has confirmed that if an AirTag is detected nearby, this alert will not appear but only for AirPods the 3rd generation, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, or even a third-party Find My network accessory. Apple will update the alert users receive in the same software update to indicate that AirPods have been traveling with them rather than an “Unknown Accessory”.
3) Support Documentation Got An Update
Apple is updating its unwanted tracking support article on apple.com today to explain the safety features built into AirTag, AirPods, and Find My Network accessories. This page has been updated to include more explanations of which Find My accessories may trigger an unwanted tracking alert, more visuals to provide specific examples of such alerts, and updated information on what to do after receiving an alert, including instructions for disabling an AirTag, AirPods, or Find My network accessory. There are also links to resources that people can use if they believe their safety is in jeopardy, such as the National Network to End Domestic Violence and the National Center for Crime Victims.
