Four Killed In Road Crash On North-South Expressway Near Pendang

ALOR SETAR, March 21 (Bernama) — Four people were killed, including one who was burnt to death, in a road crash involving a  Nissan Almera car and a Proton Wira car at KM58.2 of the North-South Expressway (north bound) near Pendang early today.

Kedah Fire and Rescue Department director Sayani Saidon said a fire team from the Pendang and Jalan Raja fire and rescue stations rushed to the scene following a distress call at 2.22 am.

“The crash involved two cars and four victims. One of them was in a Nissan Almera which was 90 per cent burnt and the three others were in an over-turned  Proton Wira.

“The fire was completely doused at 2.56 am before efforts were made to extricate the victims from the wreckage,” he said, adding that work to extricate all the victims, including of two men and a woman, aged between 26 and 52, which were in the Proton Wira, were completed by 5.43 am today.

The male victims in the Proton Wira car were identified as Shahrin Hafi Omar, 49, and Mohamad Syafiq Kassim, 26, while the woman was identified only as Arni, 52.

The identity of the charred victim has yet to be ascertained, but believed to be a man.

The remains of all the victims were handed over to the police for further action.

Meanwhile, Pendang district police chief DSP Arriz Sham Bin Hamezah said the crash was believed to have occurred at about 2.30 am when the driver of the Proton Wira car was believed to have lost control of the wheel and caused the vehicle to spin before it was hit by the Nissan Almeera.

The impact caused the Proton Wira to veer and crash into the road divider, while the Nissan Almeera burst into flames, he said, adding that all the four victims died at the scene.

He said the police were looking for witnesses of the crash and the next-of- kin of the victims involved.

Those with information are urged to contact Insp Muhamad Atiq  Elias, from the Pendang police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at  0127778761 or 04-7592122.
