Usually, when people are allergic to something, they would always point their fingers at the food. But do you know that you can be sensitive to other things besides food?
For instance, for people with eczema, food is not always the reason for their condition to worsen. According to Dr. Wan Syazween Lyana, out of all people who have this condition, only 10% of it is caused by food allergies. There are several other reasons for eczema to worsen.
Allergies That Trigger Eczema
1) Aeroallergen
- House dust mites can worsen eczema.
- Make sure to always clean and vacuum the carpets in your home.
- Other things like toys should be cleaned regularly.
2) Unfamiliar pets
- Unfamiliar pets refer to the pets that you do not own.
- The fallen animals’ fur can trigger the itchiness of eczema.
3) Clothes made from wool or nylon
- Change your clothes to wool clothes.
- If you feel this is helpful, cut the size tag on your shirt so it will not itch and worsen eczema.
4) Shower Gel
- Use unscented body wash. Besides that, use the one that does not produce foam.
- It is better to use unscented body wash than to have an itchy body.
5) Clothing detergent or dish soap
- These two items have strong chemical ingredients.
- Therefore, make sure to wear gloves when doing chores that involve these things.
6) Sweat
- Due to our hot weather in Malaysia, Dr. Syazween recommends showering thrice a day.
- Do not shower for longer than 15 minutes with lukewarm water.
7) Air pollution
- Air pollution has always been a problem in big cities.
- Start doing your part to make the world a better place.
8) Extreme weather
- Do not stay too long in a cold or hot place.
9) Virus infection
- Bacteria Staph Aureus and viruses are the main reason for eczema to get worse.
- If you encounter the signs of pus, immediately seek a doctor for further treatment.
10) Pregnancy
- There is a 50% risk for eczema to worsen during pregnancy.
- After pregnancy, the percentage of risk will go down to 10%.
- This happens due to the change in the immune system during pregnancy.
The listed above are some of the triggers that worsen eczema. Nevertheless, not all people with eczema will be sensitive to all of the stated.
If you feel like your eczema gets worse because of food allergies, you may consult the doctor.
