Bridge Collapsed In India Kills Several, Sends Dozens Into River

Officials in India reported that dozens of people have been killed after a cable bridge carrying hundreds of people collapsed into a river.

According to state officials, at least 60 people were killed when a bridge collapsed over the Machchu River on Sunday evening in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

After the incident, several individuals were hurt and got stuck under the bridge. Officials worried that the death toll could rise.

“People fell in the river and there are casualties. We don’t have the numbers yet. The rescue operations are going on.”

— Rahul Tripathi, a senior police official

ABC News reported that the collapse happened in Morbi, India. Local officials stated that the bridge had just reopened after four days of renovation. They also added that the bridge could not support the weight of the people standing on it.

For your information, during the 19th century, under British rule, they constructed the 230-meter-long historic bridge.

Besides, approximately 400 people were on the bridge when it collapsed, according to witnesses cited by local media.

In addition, a number of women and children can be seen clutching on the cables in an attempt to save themselves from slipping into the river.

However, it is uncertain how many individuals were on the bridge at the time of its collapse.
