The Story Behind Guinness World Records Holder’s Fingernails

For 24 years, Diana Armstrong has not cut her fingernails. She now holds a Guinness World Record in 2023 for having the longest fingernails on a pair of hands.

According to Guinness World Record, the combined length of Diana’s fingernails is longer than they thought. Her fingernails measure 1,306.58 cm (42 ft 10.4 in) as of 13 March 2022.

Mom, I think she’s dead

Behind her success in breaking the record, Armstrong says she had to go through ‘something.’ In 1997, Armstrong lost her daughter, Tisha Armstrong. Her nails have not been cut since her daughter’s passing as proof of her living as they used to paint each other’s nails. Armstrong added that Tisha was the one who polished and filed them for her.

In an interview with Guinness World Records, Armstrong reminisces about the time when she lost her daughter, Tisha. Before she left to buy some groceries, she had told her children to wake up and clean the house. She was at the store when her then-15-year-old daughter called and informed her that Tisha did not want to wake up. Armstrong did not believe in her daughter’s words and asked Tisha to wake up again. However, she gave her the same response until she added: “Mom, I think she’s dead.”

Tisha left them when she was 16. She left the world because of an asthma attack in her sleep. Armstrong recalls that day as the worst day of her life. What is more saddening is that Tisha stayed up late the night before her death to do her mother’s nails.

Her children had asked her to cut her nails until Armstrong told them why she chose to keep them. Tisha’s sister, Rania Armstrong, mentions that it is her mother’s way of holding on to Tisha’s memory, and she begins to accept it. She describes her mother’s nails as a ‘living memorial.’

Armstrong has not gone to a nail salon to do her nails in 22 years, but her family loves them. Her family regards her as someone special, including her grandchildren who love to do her nails. It takes 15 to 20 bottles of nail polish, and about 4 to 5 hours to go through each nail.

Armstrong adds that not everyone will think her nails are beautiful, but she does anyway. As verified in Minneapolis, Minnesota, her nails are 1,306.58 cm (42 ft 10.4 in) beating Ayanna Williams who had the record of 573.03 cm (18 ft 8 in).
