Selangor To Be Developed As The Next Creative Industry Hub, Tourism Selangor Celebrates Creative Talents

Selangor is home to many creative talents who are making waves abroad. Realizing the impact of creative talents in reimagining a better future for society, the State of Selangor, through its official tourism agency, Tourism Selangor, will be organizing TUKANG— Design and Craft Festival 2022 from 22nd until 27th November 2022 at Shah Alam Gallery. 

Curated by Suzy Sulaiman from the Faculty of Creative and Multimedia of the Multimedia University, this event will further enhance the image of the Shah Alam Gallery and Shah Alam Lake Garden as tourist attractions. TUKANG Festival is expecting 5,000 visitors domestically and internationally, with various educational activities and programs such as Innovative Exhibitions, Art Workshops, Design Talks, Pop Up Art & Craft Bazaar, Music Performance, and Tourism Selangor Pitching showcases.

The Festival highlight innovative craftspersons, designers, and artists through a public grant award. Six winning designs were awarded RM 10,000 each towards the production of their proposals and given three months of completion. Among the crafts projects that will be presented are; A Piece of Kampung by Leon Leong and Hani Ali, Cherita Ulam by Warenakita, Re: Vision by Gwyneth Jong and Maisarah Lubis, ‘Mok’ Pod by Gharib+Batiktektura, Sustainable Innovation Batik Alternative Tool by Ecovs and T.I.K.A.R. by Inside RG.

The State of Selangor has always been innovative in promoting its potential tourist attractions, especially in realizing the mission of developing Selangor as the next Creative Industry Hub, in line with Selangor’s domestic tourism campaign, Pusing Selangor Dulu! The innovative ideas from the creative talents can be utilized in developing products that consist of fashion, furniture, and food industries that could potentially be tourism attractions.

TUKANG—Design and Craft Festival 2022 which is the first to be organized by Tourism Selangor with a special collaboration with Rantai Art, will bring local arts and indie music bands to perform during the TUKANG Festival, such as Couple, Acap Loko, Heidi Moru, and Maples while featuring various vendors including food and coffees, snacks, pastries, arts and crafts.

The public is invited to the TUKANG—Design and Craft Festival 2022 to interact and engage with the designers or craftspersons throughout the workshop events, talks, and art bazaar for an immersive experience in the art and crafts world.
