HOYA Malaysia Launches First Local Study on D.I.M.S. Lenses to Fight Childhood Myopia

HOYA Malaysia has wrapped up its nationwide A Million Visions campaign, marking a major step in protecting children’s eyesight across the country. The campaign, held alongside World Sight Day 2025, offered free eye exams for kids aged 5–12 at over 800 optical stores nationwide.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the growing prevalence of childhood myopia and the importance of early detection. HOYA Malaysia encouraged parents to take proactive steps in safeguarding their children’s vision.

“Vision isn’t just eyesight, it’s opportunity, education, and quality of life,” said Lew Chee Quin, Managing Director of HOYA Malaysia. “Through this campaign, we’re helping parents protect their children’s future, not just their eyesight.”

The campaign concluded with the launch of Malaysia’s first local study on the effectiveness of D.I.M.S. (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) technology among Malay schoolchildren. Conducted by researchers from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the 12-month study involved 42 children aged 7–12 in Kuala Lumpur, comparing MiYOSMART lenses with conventional single-vision lenses.

The results were clear: children wearing D.I.M.S. lenses saw myopia progression slow by 65% on average. After one year, these children had a, 0.16 D change in myopia and a +0.07 mm increase in axial length, compared to faster progression in the single-vision lens group. The lenses also provided clear and stable vision for around 16 hours of daily use.

Developed in partnership with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, MiYOSMART lenses use D.I.M.S. technology backed by international research. This Malaysian study adds local validation, confirming its effectiveness for kids here.

“Together with our optical partners, we’re committed to early and proper vision screening for children,” Lew added. “Through research and outreach, we’re helping families prevent myopia before it starts.”

By combining cutting-edge science with nationwide awareness campaigns, HOYA Malaysia is empowering families to see a brighter, clearer future, one child at a time.
