Sustainability in the Spotlight: KLCC Wins Nation’s Highest Environmental Honour

Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre), KLCC, received the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award for Exceptional Achievement in Environmental Performance.

This award represents Malaysia’s highest and most prestigious environmental accolade.

The Centre earned the honour for its outstanding commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices.

The Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award recognises organisations that set the national benchmark for environmental excellence.

It honours those who demonstrate sustained performance, strong governance, and complete transparency in managing environmental and sustainability initiatives.

Only organisations that meet these high standards can receive this prestigious award.

Winners are verified through a highly rigorous submission process and an independent jury-led site audit.

Significance for the Business Events Industry

For the business events industry, this recognition is especially meaningful.

It affirms Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s role in championing sustainability leadership at scale, demonstrating that complex, high-volume venues can deliver credible, measurable and verifiable environmental outcomes, while raising the bar for the global meetings and events sector.

Commenting on the achievement, John Burke, General Manager of Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, said:

“Winning the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award is a powerful affirmation of our long-term commitment to sustainability. This recognition reflects years of deliberate action, disciplined investment and collective effort across our teams. More importantly, it proves that large, high-impact venues like ours can operate responsibly, transparently and at scale while continuing to support world-class business events.”

A Structured Sustainability Journey

The Centre’s sustainability journey has been both intentional and structured.

In 2022, the Centre signed the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge, followed by the publication of its Net Zero Carbon Pathway in 2023, outlining clear targets, timelines and accountability mechanisms.

Since then, the Centre has implemented a series of impactful initiatives delivering measurable results, including:

  • Operations powered by renewable energy
  • 100% of organic waste composted
  • Over 75% waste diversion from landfill, surpassing its 70% target ahead of schedule
  • 70% locally sourced ingredients across food and beverage operations
  • 100% certified sustainable packaging in use throughout the venue

The significance of the occasion was further underscored by the presence of Datuk Mohd Salem Kailany, Group Chief Executive Officer of KLCC Holdings, reflecting strong leadership commitment to environmental progress across the group and the wider KLCC precinct.

The Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award does not mark an endpoint for Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Instead, it reinforces a trajectory of leadership, accountability and momentum, for the Centre and for the industry it serves.
