Why Gardening Might Just Be the Self-Care Trend You Actually Need

Gardening offers benefits not only for physical health but also for mental well-being. Being surrounded by greenery has a calming effect, helping to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Watching plants grow can also foster a sense of accomplishment, build patience, and strengthen one’s connection with nature.

Environmental Impact

Caring for plants contributes to a healthier environment. Gardens improve soil quality, reduce erosion, and help manage rainwater by allowing it to be naturally absorbed into the ground. Small changes in lifestyle, such as growing plants at home, can have a positive impact on the environment.

Memory and Brain Health

While the effect of gardening on memory alone is still debated, research suggests it can support brain health. A Korean study involved dementia patients performing 20-minute gardening exercises, including raking and planting vegetables. Results showed increased levels of nerve growth factors linked to memory in both male and female participants.

Health and Nutrition

Gardening can also promote healthier eating habits. Growing your own herbs and vegetables gives you control over what you consume and how it is grown. Home-grown produce is often safer and cleaner, typically free from pesticides and artificial fertilizers. This encourages mindful eating and supports overall physical health, which is especially important in addressing issues like obesity.
