Malaysia under-16 social media ban marks a major shift in the country’s digital landscape as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) officially enforces the Child Protection Code (CPC) and Risk Mitigation Code (RMC) under the Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA), aiming to create a safer online environment for children.
“Safety by Design” Is Now the Standard
The new rules centre on “safety by design,” requiring social media platforms to build protection into their systems instead of just reacting to harm. Licensed platforms must design features protecting children from manipulation, harmful content, and growing cyber threats.
The Age Gate Is Officially Locked at 16
One of the biggest shifts: only users aged 16 and above can now register for social media accounts in Malaysia starting 1 June 2026.
Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube must verify age using MyKad, passports, or equivalent official documents. Basically, your digital identity now has to match your real-world identity, no shortcuts.
Phasing In Existing Users.
This isn’t an instant wipeout, but it’s a countdown. Existing users under 16 will be gradually verified over a period of up to six months.
If users are identified as underage, they get one month to download data before account restriction or removal. It’s giving “backup your digital life before the system updates you out.”
Platforms Are Now Fully Accountable
The rules apply to all licensed social media providers in Malaysia, especially those with large user bases like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube and the pressure is real, failure to comply could lead to regulatory action and enforcement penalties.
Risk Mitigation Code (RMC) requires platforms to assess risks, moderate content, strengthen safety tools, and improve accountability.
A New Era of Digital Responsibility
MCMC says this is part of broader mission to build a safer responsible online environment.The internet is no longer free-entry, it now has rules, gates, and responsibility.
