A referee is one of the most important elements in a football match. Not only the players, the ball and the audience but a referee is needed to officiate the game professionally and fairly. Sometimes, they contribute to the fun and thrill of watching a football match.
Through the years, there were many accidents involving referees. If the spectators found an error in their judgement, the referee would face the heavier blow. This happens when their favourite team is not in their favour. Hence, causing displeasure and dissatisfaction from them.
When watching a football game, does this thought cross your mind: what are the essential tools a football referee needs?
Nasseb Ali (@refereekampung) shares the four tools a referee must have on his TikTok. Let’s learn together!

Whistle
A referee uses a whistle to control the game. Whistles are essential to stop, start or restart the match. However, it’s not always like that. Not all stoppages, starts or restarts require them to blow the whistle.
Watch
The main point of wearing a watch is to time the game.
Do you know that a referee uses two watches? The second watch is used to calculate the time of the accident. What is this? Time of accident covers: 1) when a player is injured, 2) player exchange, 3) celebrating the goal, etc.
Next, it’s also a backup plan if the first watch malfunctions.
Lastly, the second watch is to check their pulse, blood pressure and other health-related concerns.
@refereekampung has also explained the use of a second watch in detail here:

Red and yellow card
A yellow card is a caution or warning for a player that violates the rules. It gives players a chance to stay on the field for the remainder of the match.
The red card is given to the player, and they have to leave the pitch. This makes them unable to continue playing.
Notebook
The notebook is like an official record of the match. The referee will jot down everything that happens in the 90-minute play.
So, these are the tools are referee has to have. Now we know the purpose of these tools to them!
